Is serum really necessary?

If you're not really into your skincare or you're keeping it to a strict minimum you probably don't even know what I'm talking about! Serum is a skincare product you usually apply just after you washed your face or after your toning lotion. This type of product is made for delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin, this is why you're meant to apply it before your moisturizer. For exemple, if your serum has hyaluronic acid as the main ingredient, which is good because HA binds to water, the effects of the moisturizer that you apply after that will only increase so your skin looks more dewy and glowy.

Because serums are made specifically to deliver a high concentration of active ingredients, a lot of high end brands target very specific markets. Older women will be drawn to them because of their anti-aging and anti-wrinkle formulas. The fact that serums are made of more potent ingredients is  why those products can have a very high price tag. But don't be detered by the price, high street brands and natural brands can be less expansive and have really nice products as well.

Nivea's Q10Plus anti-wrinkle serum
I don't really like the smell but for thighter budget it can be a great alternative to the more expensive ones. Its main ingredient is hyaluronic acid which helps the skin for hydration and tightness.

Lancôme Advanced Génifique serum
I really like that serum because it doesn't only target older women. Your skin looks more refreshed and it's a nice texture which really penetrates the skin immediately

If you have an acne-prone skin the best ingredients to look for in your serum should be zinc (soothes irritated skin), salicylic acid (unclogs pores) and vitamin C (reduces inflammation and helps to repair skin). If you have dry skin, you should look for glycolic acid (gently exfoliate) and hyaluronic acid (retains moisture). The fact that your skin produces oil naturaly doesn't mean that it doesn't need moisture. Dehydrated skin means that your skin needs water. Dry skin means that it lacks oil. So your skin can be dehydrated even though it produces oil throughout the day.

Du Monde à la Provence's Gaia serum (natural French brand)
The scent is lovely (white musc) and the formula is really nice and smooth. It's still pretty new to my collection so I need to test it more but it's supposed to brighten and illuminate the skin. I'll definitely say that it's a nice budget buy.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid 2% + B5 serum
Really nice serum to put on before your moisturizer if you have dehydrated skin. You only need a few drops of the serum for it to be effective, no need to go crazy!

Caudalie's Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching serum (natural French brand)
It's a nice serum, made from natural ingrédients like grape just like the DMP serum. The scent is nice but not overpowering and it keeps your skin hydrated all day.

So here you go. I know it adds a step into your routine but I really think using serums can only improves the state of your skin but you have to be carefull with some of them... You don't need to go crazy if the instructions say you only need a few drops! If you use them, what is your favourite serum?
